Winner of four of his first five fights in the UFC, Jim Miller (fighting out of Whippany, N.J./15-2) is making plenty of noise in the lightweight division. In his last two fights, the 26-year-old Sparta, New Jersey-born fighter earned a unanimous decision victory against veteran Mac Danzig followed by a solid TKO win against Steve Lopez at UFC 103. Now Miller turns his attention to knockout artist Duane “Bang” Ludwig (fighting out of Denver, Colo./27-9). A veteran of two UFC fights, Ludwig turned heads with an 11-second destruction of Jonathan Goulet in 2006 and is aiming to keep his unbeaten Octagon streak going.

MMA Picks: Getting Picks in Early : Online sportsbooks have embraced MMA as much as the mainstream media has, with most of them putting up MMA odds on all the fights. One of the things I believe is important to making a profit when betting on MMA is to look for great line value very early. Let’s take the last UFC as an example. Early lines appeared for Penn at around -190 or so. If you look at value, Pen at under -200 is awesome. Considering he was in great shape and came off the Florian fight with gas still in the tank, Penn was a good bet against anyone in the division, especially at anything under -200. BJ came in about -300 before the event, which was still decent but it wasn’t sub two-hundred. An early commitment would have paid out handsomely.
The Alexander/Slice fight for the Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale showed this trend as well. With Alexander opening around -120 at most online sportsbooks and then gaining momentum as the favorite, he closed at the -300 range. An early bet would have been a good bet. If Alexander won of course. This just reminds us that we have to do our homework on the fighters as well. As you know, there’s more to the bet than the making sure you get great odds.
If you know who you want to bet and will stick with that choice no matter how the action affects the lines, an early bet should be considered. Check out BetRepublic the day the lines come out as we always have a healthy discussion and a few early picks. Futures on your favorites can be a great value. Don’t rush in though, but watch closely and when you see some movement and the direction they take, you should start considering your choices.
The main thing is to check lines early and to keep checking back. The next most important thing is to place the bet, because if you don’t wager, you can’t win.

MMA fighters are some of the best conditioned athletes in the world. This is because mixed martial arts requires complete exertion for several minutes at a time, something that’ll push most people’s anaerobic capacity over the top. This is why all of the top fighters undertake insane strength and conditioning programs–they would gas if they didn’t. Because of the highly anaerobic nature of MMA, it’s important to make note that preparing for it requires significantly more weight training.
When you first start lifting for MMA, you’ll want to build up a strong base. You should work with heavy weights, but do no more than 5 reps. This will prevent you from gaining too much muscle, but will also increase your strength through neurological conditioning. After you’ve built a strong base, which can take anywhere from three to six months, you can move on to powerbuilding exercises. Most of these exercises will work on muscular coordination moreso than muscle growth, which means that you’ll increase your functional strength and explosive power without getting much bigger in size. With the MMA weight classes, this is ideal.
There are a few ways that you can work on improving your explosive power. The first way is to utilize Olympic or power lifts. These include power cleans, snatches, and clean and jerks. These exercises will increase your strength and conditioning significantly. The only downside is learning how to do the complicated lifts; teaching yourself how to do a proper snatch can take a few weeks or more. The second way is with the use of plyometrics. These are somewhat similar in function to the olympic lifts, but they are also a good amount different. Plyometrics require that you constrict a muscle, extend it, and then constrict it again to release the elastic energy stored inside of it. That’s why they frequently use movements like depth jumps, which utilize multiple explosive steps. Due to the nature of the exercise, it’s very easy to harm yourself, so I don’t recommend doing these too often. It’s better to stick with Olympic lifts.
While training four anaerobic capacity is important, it’s also a good idea to work on your cardio. You should be running at least a mile a day, maybe two. Running, however, can be a fairly dangerous activity. Many people injure their knees or shins from excessive or incorrect running, so make sure you do it in moderation. If your legs hurt, then you shouldn’t run. Always listen to your body; it knows what’s best for you.

Taekwondo is an approach to the martial arts, that instills just more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that shows ways of increasing our spirit and life through training our body and mind. What is the meaning of Taekwondo?
It is comprised of three distinct parts “Tae-Kwon-Do”, however, it’s made up of only one word in Korean. “Tae” means “foot,” “to step on,” or “leg”; “Kwon” means “fight,” or “fist”; and “Do” means the “way” or “discipline.” If we put these three parts together, we can see a couple of critical ideas behind Taekwondo.

Secondly, Taekwondo is a path to control a fighting situation so the outcome of the situation is peace. This idea comes from the meaning of Tae Kwon “to put fists under control”. Taekwondo has developed along side the history of Korea and has, been represented by several different labels in throughout the course of its history. In Korea, Taekwondo started out as a defense martial art called “Taekkyon” or “Subak,” and made as a way of challenging body and mind in the ancient kingdom of Koguryo, under the name of “Sunbae.” In the Shilla period, it had become the backbone of Hwarangdo that focused on producing leaders of the country. Nowadays Taekwondo is a national sport of South Korea.
Taekwondo today is similar to arts in other Asian countries and combines concepts and ideas with them, because throughout its history it has incorporated many different styles that were in the countries that surrounded them, like Japan and China.
But Taekwondo sets itself apart from many oriental martial arts in a couple respects. First, physically it is very dynamic with active movements that include a mirage of foot skills. Secondly, the physical movements are in line with that of the mind and life as a whole.
Third, it possesses dynamic poomsae (see poomsae in the martial arts) from another perspective. Taekwondo can be characterized by unity: the unity of body, mind, and life, and the unity of the poomsae and confrontation. When you participate in Taekwondo, you should quite your mind and synchronize your mind with your movements, and spread this harmony to your life and society. This is how the principle of the physical movements, the principle of training ones mind, and the principle of oneness of life become whole.
Taekwondo is an attitude about life, just like any other aspect of ones life like having a job, raising a family, or fighting for something in which you believe in. What sets Taekwondo apart from these is that it is an activity for survival in extremely life changing situations. One must always overcome the enemy that is trying to cause harm to you. But simply winning a fight is not enough to ensure one’s security, because the enemy may recuperate and attempt to assault you again. Also, there can be many other enemies than the one that was just defeated. A person can’t ever truly feel safe unless that person gains a continued sense of peace. To ascertain this permanent or lasting sense of peace, one needs wholeness. This is the aim of Taekwondo. Otherwise Taekwondo would be no different from any other street-fighting skills.
Taekwondo’s goal is for mental and spiritual growth and improvements in ones life through its unique activities. This is why one could say Taekwondo is a way of life. To ultimately enable one to lead more valuable lives, we would do well by obtaining the guiding principles at the core of Taekwondo.
