Making the change from Ving Tsun Sticky Hands to Taijiquan Pushing Hands should be an easy one. Of course, a fire drill is always easy, until one has a real fire in their backyard. Thus, to understand this change one must make a few adjustments in the way they think about things.

First, the Sticky Hands of Ving Tsun is usually done with a certain springiness in the limbs. Someone pushes on your defense, and you give away enough to guide them, and then spring into the opening created. This is a generality, and there is a lot more to the drill, but it is what we must focus on to make our transition.

Second, the pushing hands of Taijiquan is actually a bit misnamed. It should be called ‘emptying the whole body,’ simply, one must give way until the opponent over pushes and thus unbalances himself. This summation of Pushing Hands is quite inadequate, but, again, we are attempting to bridge from one exercise to another, and this is what we must focus on.

Now, we go from giving way with a certain ‘springiness’ inherent in the movement, to a giving way (emptying of) with the entire body. One drill is giving way with the arms, and the other is to absent the whole body from incoming forces. Thus, if one can take the ‘springy’ quality out of the arms, and just concentrate on emptying the arms and the rest of the body, the transition can be accomplished easily.

When an opponent strikes and you feel that the springing quality is not sufficient for the situation, or you just feel like converting into Taiji, match the velocity of the incoming strike, turn the waist, and guide him past. It goes without saying, that he should not feel you manipulate him. It must be a guidance not of flesh to flesh, but of hair to hair. Your touch should be so soft that he doesn’t fight it.

At this point you should be able to question whether you are doing the art of Ving Tsun, or the art of Taiji. The only difference, you see, is in the depth and height of stance. You may be standing in a two legged stance (goat riding) or in a single leg stance of some height, versus being in the deeper shifting stance that is common to Taijiquan.

So we come to the crux of the matter. Give way in sticky hands and let the attacker fall through (or into a lock). Or give way in pushing hands, and then use springiness.

We are not really talking large differences here, merely subtle differences that are, truth be told, inherent in either exercise should one take the time to study gung fu long enough and with a correct eye to the potentials. The whole point here, is to help people who have been trained in one art to adjust to new training and new methods, and new (sometimes just stated differently) awareness. That is how you make the transition from Ving Tsun Sticky Hands to Taijiquan Pushing Hands.

Fighting uniforms are used in many kinds of sports from boxing to martial arts. Not everyone uses them in order to participate in the sport but if you look at some of the most accomplished and famous martial arts experts in the world, you’ll notice that they all wear fighting gi when they participate in tournaments and the like.

This is because there are many benefits to wearing fighting uniforms, otherwise known as gis, when practicing and during tournaments. If you’re still on the fence as to whether you really need to invest in a fighting gi, consider the following benefits.

Full Range of Motion

Wearing a gi will provide you with the full range of motion that you need in order to perform all of the moves correctly. This will allow you to learn everything you need to know without the implications of too tight clothing or awkward fittings. Be sure to order the right size and you are good to go. Otherwise you might not feel like investing in one was a good idea.

Ability to Showcase Your Level

As you progress through the martial arts craft you will be awarded different color belts that look best on fighting uniforms. In fact, it looks pretty funny wearing your well earned black belt around some sweat pants and a t-shirt. The most common color fighting gis are white ones because they help to highlight the colored belts.

An Affordable Solution to Workout Clothes

Instead of having to invest in a set of workout clothes so that you don’t have to wash them after every workout, you can buy only one gi and be ready to go for the entire year, and maybe even longer. This is important in today’s economy so don’t overlook the financial aspects of your investment.

There are a number of reasons to purchase your new fighting uniforms on the Internet if you’re interested in investing in one. The first reason is because you can find a wide range of options compared to what you are bound to find at your local brick and mortar store. Another reason is because you can easily compare the different options available so that you can make sure that you’re getting the most bang for your buck.

You can read consumer reviews to learn what others think about particular products, which is also a great way to learn about new products other people are recommending. Because there is so much competition on the market, you will find the prices to be quite affordable which will make your decision to get a fighting gi for your next tournament or practice. Remember to take your measurements before placing your order!

That you can increase martial arts chi power by relaxing is at once zen, and frustrating. Oddly, it doesn’t have to be frustrating, it merely needs to be understood. Key to understanding this is understanding what ‘type’ of relaxation is required by each art for that art to cause manifestation of chi power.

Before we go into this by individual art, one thing needs to be understood. Relaxation is the key to power. It would not be overly incorrect to say that the body is a machine, and the mind is a radio transmitter. This means that the machine, and the transmitter, need to be cleared of all static if they are to operate at maximum efficiency.

I prefer teaching the art of Karate first, as this is a simple art that can generate massive amounts of chi. It deals with pure explosion from the tan tien, though, the sad truth, most people treat it like a calisthenic. One needs to stop doing exercises without thought and invest their awareness if they are going to create the intrinsic power of the martial arts.

Breath gently and learn to relax the body, and tighten only the fist. The body might be taut in the beginning, as one learns how to align it correctly and connect it to the ground, but this tautness should give way to a relaxation that can withstand the introduction of force to the frame. The fist does not have to be excessively tight, just tight enough to emphasize the space surrounding the moment of focus.

The real secret to higher martial arts is to move energy through the body while the body is in motion. This can be done in Shaolin martial arts easily; the more the circular movement, and the more awareness given to proper alignment, the easier it is to do. Again, breath and relax even while handling the application of weight to your frame.

The highest martial arts are such as Pa Kua Chang and Tai Chi Chuan. The reason for this is that the slower you go the more you look, the more you look the more you know. This is the concept of investing awareness brought to its peak.

Myself, I have done walking the circle and the Tai Chi form to the point of one move a minute. If I stop totally, this is called pile stancing, and it is very effective. I usually do stoppage merely to take the time to assess the form and make sure everything is in the right place.

In conclusion, no art is better than any other art, they are just different pieces of the same puzzle; there are no superior combat disciplines, merely superior martial arts students. Learn to relax, even while exhausted, and you will find that there is no fatigue, only a pathway to more energy.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Boxing are both hugely popular combat sports. However, they differ in their approaches and techniques. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on self defense. It aims at gaining control over a larger and stronger opponent with minimum effort and by using specific techniques. Boxing is a sport that involves movements to attack and defend at the same time.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has evolved from Jiu-Jitsu, which is known as the oldest martial art. It uses grappling and ground fighting techniques for combat. It uses joint locks, compression locks and chokeholds to make the opponent submit. It came into existence when Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka, immigrated to Brazil in 1910′s. He propagated a martial art that used techniques of Jiu-Jitsu and Judo.

Boxing is known to have evolved from fist fighting. Initially, it looked more like a combat without rules. It included kicking, punching, eye gouging, biting, hair-pulling, etc. Standardization of boxing rules started in 1838 with introduction of rings to fight. The rules regarding safety gear and match duration were defined in 1867.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , being an art of self-defense, discourages all techniques aimed at injuring the opponent. The athlete has to focus on gaining control on his opponent. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches an athlete to respect his opponent’s strength. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes are responsible for the safety of their opponents. While applying a technique to make his opponent submit, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athlete must apply the pressure slowly so that he does not hurt the opponent beyond the necessary level.

Boxing has a set of rules too. A boxer uses jab punches, cross punches, hook punches, uppercut punches, guards, defense, etc. to win over his opponent. Boxers cannot use techniques like biting, scratching or gouging to injure their opponent. In addition, they are not allowed to hit below their opponent’s waist. However, unlike Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a boxer is not bound to ensure the safety of his opponent.

The rules for uniforms in both the sports also differ. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes have to wear a kimono, pants, shorts and belt during a tournament. The uniform is either blue or white in color. Boxers are required to wear only a pair of short for a tournament and there is no specific rule for the color.

How To Find An Amateur MMA Fighter To Sponsor or How Did They Find Me!?

PART 2 IN A YEAR LONG SERIES

So, I ask myself, why is this MMA Amateur  Fighter quest soooooo  difficult?  Is it me?

Why are we experiencing a failure to communicate?  Or is it a combination of perfect storm and kismet?  Probably the latter for martial arts practitioners in search of the elusive title of Ultimate Fighter.

 Here’s why:

When we started this “adventure”, no doubt the allure of sponsoring an Ammy for MMA was intoxicating.  This could take us to the “Big UFC Show”.  Through trial and error, lots of errors, we found out, maybe not exactly the “Big Show”, but surely venues that are big deals to their local MMA communities.  Boy, did we get an eye opener!  I quickly found out that:

Ammys change their minds about MMA as they complete or try to complete their bout.
Ammys no show- fights get cancelled- so who’s wearing my brand in the cage??  Public awareness of my brand?  Somebody’s gotta wear them before a pair gets sold. Jeesh!  Another lesson and another delay for the Marketing Department.
Ammys THOUGHT they might want to join the big league, pro circuit for MMA, but injuries, severe injuries, quickly weed out the serious and competent contenders from wannabes.
Trainers and Ammys quarrel and split up- who knew!?  I now see the delicate balance of MMA training direction and why bruised egos alter the tentative relationship between Trainer and Fighter.  Much like a nasty divorce, but, no lawyers, thank God!
Everybody wants something- freebies, swag, free MMA fight shorts, MMA rashguards,

MMA fight gloves, shinguards, but something!

So, after a couple of stalled starts, Omegazone came to the conclusion that we need more structure and creative standards for sponsorship of Amateur MMA contenders.  No more verbals, no more smile and a handshake, sorry to say.  Here’s what can be put in place to protect the company as much as possible if sponsorship of Ammys is as alluring to you as it was to Omegazone.

Have a direct line of communication with the fighter, themselves, period.  Putting your complete trust in the trainer could derail your marketing intentions.  Just remember that their goals aren‘t exactly the same as yours.  Control your Sponsorship.
Put it in writing!  Tried and true, can’t imagine why we didn’t do this to begin with.

A contract should state what action or benefit  is to be provided by the Sponsor(Company) and what return is expected from the fighter.

Both parties should sign and date the agreement with a length of term listed.  Start date and end date.
Weasel Clause- Also known as the get out of jail free clause.  If you need to cancel the contract with the Amateur Fighter, this may be your only out.  Specify exactly what would break the contractual agreement for you.
Have an Attorney who specializes in matters such as this draft a contract for you or search on-line for free contract drafts that would fulfill your needs.

Our mistake was that we had no idea what to expect.  Due to our admitted lack of experience in these matters, we were somewhat disappointed in our results.  So, I can share the pain of this particular learning curve of sponsorship with you.  As intended, this information about Amateur MMA Sponsorship should benefit any other company considering the same marketing path to broaden the scope of customer awareness for their branded merchandise.

But, hey, we still have stars in our eyes and an Ammy coming  up in August- with a current 3-0 record.  He’ll be wearing our Omegazone Fight Shorts in the cage……………………I’m crossing my fingers on this one………………….

If you are interested in Krav Maga but not sure whether to get a professional training in it, these answers to Frequently Asked Questions about this self defense system would help you make up your mind. Read on.

Krav Maga as a close combat system, is quite different from other martial arts. While martial arts like karate have spiritual and sporting elements, Krav Maga has nothing as such. It is a pure self defense system created to defend yourselves in real time situations. These basic questions and answers about Krav Maga would help you develop a basic understanding about the system.

Q. How did Krav Maga come into being?

Krav Maga was derived from street-fighting skills where you instinctively try to defend yourselves from the attackers by any means possible. The goal of this fighting technique is to respond to an attack with overwhelming force in the quickest time possible.

Q. Who founded Krav Maga?

Imi Lichtenfeld, an Israeli citizen, is credited as the founder of this self defense technique. The term means “close combat” in Hebrew and was developed in the 1930s by Imi Lichtenfeld.

Q. What are the basic principles of Krav Maga?

General principles of Krav Maga include counter attacking as soon as possible or attacking preemptively, targeting most vulnerable parts of the body, trying to neutralize the opponents as quickly as possible, using available objects as weapons and maintaining awareness of the surroundings to deal with any possible threat.

Q. How does Krav Maga differ from other close combat systems?

Krav Maga differs from other close fighting systems such as Karate in that it has no real rules, no competitions and no sporting applications. It is just and just for self defense.

Q. What about basic training?

Basic Krav Maga training is a mixed aerobic and anaerobic workout. Protective pads and other personal protection equipment are usually used during initial training. Practical scenarios are used to train personnel for situations encountered in real world situations.

Q. What are the four arms of Krav Maga defense system?

Krav Maga self defense system has four arms – Civilian, Military, Law Enforcement and VIP Protection.

Q. What is the objective of civilian Krav Maga training?

The training is designed to prepare civilians to defend themselves in any type of street confrontation. The technique prepares practitioners to defend against bare handed opponents as well as armed assailants wielding edged, impact or firearms. Multiple opponent strategies and tactics are also taught. In short, the civilian training focuses on street-proven self-defense techniques.

Q. How can Krav Maga fighters strike with such force during a close combat?

During close combat, punches and strikes are usually short because of the short distance between fighters. Force is generated by using the full body mass in motion behind all punches and strikes.

Q. Is background in other martial arts useful?

Of course. If you know other martial arts, you would definitely learn Krav Maga faster.

Q. Can trainees get hurt while training?

Professional training is imparted under the eye of watchful instructors and the trainees are allowed to dress in protective wear. However, chances of an injury is always there, as in other martial arts.

Designed for street fighting, Krav Maga techniques are highly effective in taking out an opponent quickly. Apart from the real fighting, the system also helps the trainees to gain self confidence and fitness.
