What Form Of Self Defense Really Works?

Maybe you’ve thought about taking a self defense class in the past, but there are
so many styles, Jujitsu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Kung Fu, etc.. What really works?
Which one will give you real world skills that could stop an attacker?

Let’s look at traditional arts such as Kung Fu. You decide you want to learn self defense.
So you find a Dojo, walk in and the instructor ensures you that what he teaches is self defense. You sign up, with the confidence you are learning to defend yourself. Your first day, after 5000 sit ups, jumping jacks and 15 minutes of stretching, you start to learn forms or kata’s. You think to yourself, “This is cool but when am I going to learn self defense?”

Then you learn how to spar. You get all padded up (for safety) and learn how to fight in a competition.  A competition with rules and a referee to stop it if anyone gets hurt (just like in a street fight). Then you learn some cool close quarters techniques and think, “Ok, finally self defense!”  You run home to show your new defense to someone. You say, “Grab my wrist. No my other wrist. With your other hand.” Then it works. Wait a minute! If you’re not attacked exactly like you learned it, the technique does not work! Then you say “Am I really learning to defend myself?”  No! You’re not. To really learn self defense you have to train for self defense! If you train to fight in competitions, that’s what you can do. If you train to be really good at forms, that’s what you can do. If you want to learn real street defense, YOU MUST TRAIN FOR IT!

What about getting a self defense product such as Pepper Spray, a Taser or Stun Gun?
All of these are great! But just like a firearm you must learn how to use them properly.
Yes, all of these products put the odds back in your favor, but just getting one and not really
knowing how to use it is pointless. You must have a plan. Ask yourself “If I’m attacked what exactly am I going to do? How will I defend myself? How will I get to my self defense product?”
These are things you must have pre-planned!

So what self defense system works then?  There are some good ones out there you just have to look. Here is a small list of some great real world self defense systems.

Close Combat
Krav Maga
Kenpo Karate
KAPAP
F.I.G.H.T
Commando Krav Maga
Split Second Survival
Jeet Kwon Do

These are just a few. There are many great systems and instructors. If you do decide to learn self defense, ask them “Do you teach reality based self defense? Will your techniques teach me to defend myself in a brutal street attack? Will you teach me to defend myself against knives, guns, multiple attackers? What if I’m knocked to the ground, can you teach me to defend myself?”

All of these questions are important! If they don’t teach you this and you want to learn real self defense, keep looking! If you have any questions, please leave them on this Blog. I will
